Ramón López Soler (Manresa, 1806–Madrid, 1836) was a novelist and journalist, and one of the decisive introducers of narrative romanticism in Spain. His short career reveals how quickly the European historical novel was translated, imitated and transformed within the Spanish publishing market.

Walter Scott and Spanish subject matter

López Soler openly declared his intention to make Walter Scott’s style known and to demonstrate that Spanish history offered episodes as suitable for fiction as those of Scotland or England. His work therefore occupies a boundary between formal dependence and the invention of a national tradition.

Los bandos de Castilla

Los bandos de Castilla o El caballero del Cisne (1830) sets a romantic and chivalric plot in the reign of John II, amid noble factions and the power of Álvaro de Luna.
