Patricio de la Escosura (Madrid, 1807–1878) was a writer, politician, diplomat and member of the academy. His public life, marked by conspiracies, exile and ministerial responsibilities, shares with his literature a tension between legitimacy, ambition and historical memory.
The writer and historical heritage
Besides novels and plays, he wrote the texts of España artística y monumental, accompanied by Jenaro Pérez Villaamil’s plates. His work thus participates in the romantic construction of a Spain of ruins, castles, lineages and dynastic episodes.
Ni rey ni Roque
Ni rey ni Roque (1835) reworks the episode of the pastry cook of Madrigal and the legendary survival of King Sebastian. Political imposture, collective credulity and the desire for restoration turn the past into a laboratory of uncertain legitimacies.
