Juan Cortada y Sala (Barcelona, 1805–Sant Gervasi de Cassoles, 1868) was a jurist, historian, journalist and novelist. He participated actively in nineteenth-century Catalan cultural life and helped make the Catalan Middle Ages a subject of romantic narrative written in Castilian.

Regional history and romantic fiction

His fiction combines documentary ambition, patriotic evocation and chivalric adventure. Reconstructing the past asserts Catalonia’s historical distinctiveness within the romantic cultural revival, going beyond a decorative setting.

La heredera de Sangumí

La heredera de Sangumí, published in 1835 and set in the twelfth century, develops a plot of lineage, love and feudal power. Its attention to history and regional landscape anticipates one of the most fruitful directions of Spanish historical fiction.
