Estanislao de Cosca Vayo y Lamarca (Valencia, 1804–1864) was a jurist, journalist, historian and novelist. Associated with the liberalism of the Constitutional Triennium, he was among the first authors to adapt the romantic historical novel to Spain.

A Valencian route to historical fiction

Vayo explored sentimental fiction, costumbrismo and historical reconstruction. His writing seeks an autonomous national tradition while engaging with Walter Scott’s European model. The eastern Spanish landscape, the Cid material and the medieval setting give his work a distinctive regional accent.

La conquista de Valencia por el Cid

Published in 1831, La conquista de Valencia por el Cid turns the siege of the city into an adventure narrative and asserts the capacity of Spanish history to produce modern fiction.
